The Six Branch Combinations
The Earthly Branches pair off into six intimate bonds.
Six Branch Combinations (地支六合)
In a nutshell: The twelve Earthly Branches pair off into six close bonds — when two matching branches meet, they lock together and may even transform into a new element.
What Is It?
Just as the Heavenly Stems have their five combinations, the Earthly Branches form six pairings known as the branch combinations (地支六合). These aren't random — they follow a precise pattern of Yin-Yang attraction across the branch cycle.
Each pair bonds intimately, which is why they're called the "Six Harmonies" (六合) — six close unions.
The Six Combinations
| Combination | Transforms Into | Nature |
|---|---|---|
| Zi (子) + Chou (丑) | Earth (土) | Water + Earth → Earth |
| Yin (寅) + Hai (亥) | Wood (木) | Wood + Water → Wood |
| Mao (卯) + Xu (戌) | Fire (火) | Wood + Earth → Fire |
| Chen (辰) + You (酉) | Metal (金) | Earth + Metal → Metal |
| Si (巳) + Shen (申) | Water (水) | Fire + Metal → Water |
| Wu (午) + Wei (未) | Sun + Moon (午未合) | Fire + Earth — traditionally said to transform into Fire or remain untransformed |
Memory aid: Start from Zi in the north and pair each branch with the one directly across the zodiac wheel — six pairs, one full loop.
Conditions for Transformation
As with stem combinations, branch combinations don't always transform fully:
- Branches must be adjacent — the two branches need to sit in neighboring pillars (Year and Month, or Month and Day) for the bond to carry real strength. Distant pairs are too weak.
- The month must support the target element — for instance, Chen and You combining into Metal needs a Metal-friendly month (Shen, You) or an Earth month (Chen, Xu, Chou, Wei) that generates Metal.
- No clash interference — if one of the paired branches is simultaneously being clashed (say, Zi is pulled into a Zi-Chou combination while Wu clashes Zi from elsewhere), the combination falls apart.
- Overall chart cooperation — the chart as a whole has to back the transformation direction; strong competing forces can block it.
When branches combine but don't transform, they still bond — the two are "stuck together," and each one's individual energy gets constrained.
What Do Branch Combinations Mean?
Branch combinations carry three layers of meaning — intimacy, cooperation, and constraint:
- Intimacy: The two branches are drawn to each other — think close friends or business partners who naturally gravitate together.
- Cooperation: Combined branches pool their effort toward a shared element, creating genuine synergy.
- Constraint (绊): Combination is also a kind of "tying up." A branch that's been combined can't freely exert its influence — which is good news if it's your unfavorable element, and a problem if it's your favorable element.
How to Read It in Your BaZi Chart
- What's being bound? If the combination catches your favorable element, that element's power can't come through. If it catches your unfavorable element, the constraint is actually working in your favor.
- Does the combination transform? A successful transformation replaces the branches' original elements with a new one. If it combines without transforming, both branches are simply locked in place.
- Clash versus combination priority: When a branch combination and a clash appear simultaneously, the clash generally wins — check for clashes first, then see whether the combination can still hold.
- Marriage and relationships: Branch combinations often surface in discussions of romantic bonds. If your Day Branch (the spouse palace) is being combined, it may signal a tight marital connection — or it may mean your spouse is being "combined away." The outcome hinges on the transformation's direction and whether the resulting element is favorable or unfavorable for you.
Common Misconceptions
❌ "Branch combinations always transform" — the conditions for transformation are strict. More often than not, the branches combine without transforming; they're simply "bound." ❌ "Combinations are always favorable" — binding an unfavorable element is great; binding a favorable element is a real problem. ❌ "Branch combinations outweigh three-harmony combinations" — three-harmony combinations are generally the stronger force. Branch combinations lean toward intimate bonds; three-harmony combinations lean toward concentrated elemental power.
