Three-Harmony Combinations (地支三合局)

In a nutshell: When three specific Earthly Branches join together, they form a harmony frame (三合局) — a combined force far more powerful than any pair combination.

What Is It?

Branch combinations work in pairs, but three-harmony combinations operate in trios. Three branches, each drawn from a different part of the cycle, lock together to form a complete elemental frame. This frame generates a unified elemental force so strong it can dominate an entire chart.

There are exactly four harmony frames, one for each directional element:

The Four Harmony Frames

Memory aid: Each frame pulls together the three branches that mark an element's birth, peak, and tomb — the Growth (长生), Emperor (帝旺), and Grave (墓库) stages of its life cycle.

Take the Shen-Zi-Chen Water frame:

• Shen (申): where Water is born (长生) — the source
• Zi (子): where Water reaches its Emperor peak (帝旺) — the powerhouse
• Chen (辰): where Water enters its Grave (墓库) — the reservoir

Together they complete a full Water cycle — source, peak, and storage — producing a Water force that's extremely concentrated and hard to break.

Once a frame is complete, its force far exceeds any pair combination, the three branches all but merge into a single entity, and the frame takes priority over ordinary branch combinations and clashes.

Half-Frames (半三合)

You don't always need all three branches. Two out of three creates a half-frame (半合):

The growth half-frame is the strongest of the three because it connects source to peak — pure upward momentum. The grave half-frame links peak to storage — still powerful, but with a settling quality. Without the Emperor branch, the growth-grave pairing is considered incomplete and notably weaker.

Half-frames are weaker than full three-harmony frames, but still stronger than ordinary branch combinations.

How to Read It in Your BaZi Chart

Three-harmony frames are among the most powerful structures in BaZi:

1. Is the frame complete? If your chart contains all three branches (say, Shen, Zi, and Chen all present), that element becomes enormously strong — strong enough to define the chart's entire pattern.
2. Is the element favorable or unfavorable? Because three-harmony frames carry such tremendous force, a favorable element brings great fortune while an unfavorable one brings immense pressure.
3. Can a half-frame hold? A half-frame under siege from clashing branches (for instance, Shen and Zi forming a Water half-frame while Xu clashes Chen) becomes unstable and may not hold.
4. How does the frame relate to the Day Master? The element a frame produces acts directly on the Day Master. If your Day Master is Bing Fire and the chart forms a Shen-Zi-Chen Water frame, that Water becomes a formidable adversary — Water controls Fire.
5. Luck pillar completion: If your natal chart holds two branches of a frame and a Major Luck Cycle delivers the third, the full frame suddenly activates — often marking a dramatic turning point in life.

Common Misconceptions

❌ "A half-frame is the same as a full frame" — a half-frame is far weaker than a complete three-harmony frame. Don't treat them as equivalents. ❌ "Three-harmony frames always transform" — like all combinations, they need the month branch and overall chart to cooperate. Without the right conditions, the branches combine without fully transforming. ❌ "A clash always breaks a frame" — it depends on the clash's strength and position. Sometimes a three-harmony frame is so dominant that the clash bounces off without disrupting it.
