Major Luck Cycle

Each Major Luck Cycle governs a ten-year chapter of life, setting the tone for that decade's fortunes.

Major Luck Cycle

In one line: A Major Luck Cycle is a ten-year chapter in your life's story — each one sets a distinct tone for the decade ahead.

What Is It?

Your natal BaZi chart captures your innate destiny — the hand you were dealt at birth. The Major Luck Cycles are the changing terrain you travel across. Each cycle lasts ten years and brings a fresh blend of elemental energies.

Picture your chart as a car and the Major Luck Cycle as the road. A sports car on a washed-out dirt road still gets stuck; an ordinary sedan on a wide-open highway can go the distance. The Major Luck Cycle sets the backdrop for every decade of your life.

Arrangement Rules

Direction

Two factors decide which way your luck cycles run:

  • Yang year stem, male / Yin year stem, female → count forward (顺排)
  • Yin year stem, male / Yang year stem, female → count backward (逆排)

Yang and Yin Stems

  • Yang stems: Jia, Bing, Wu, Geng, Ren
  • Yin stems: Yi, Ding, Ji, Xin, Gui

How to Arrange

Start from the month pillar and step through the sixty Jiazi cycle:

  • Forward: month pillar → the next pillar in sequence → the one after that …
  • Backward: month pillar → the previous pillar in sequence → the one before that …

Example: Month pillar is 丙寅

  • Forward: 丁卯 → 戊辰 → 己巳 → 庚午 …
  • Backward: 乙丑 → 甲子 → 癸亥 → 壬戌 …

Starting Age

Your starting age depends on how close your birthday falls to the nearest solar term (节气):

  1. Yang male / Yin female: count the days from your birth date forward to the next solar term
  2. Yin male / Yang female: count the days from your birth date backward to the previous solar term
  3. Every 3 days = 1 year of starting age
  4. Leftover days: 1 day = 4 months, 2 days = 8 months

For example:

  • A male born in a Yang year, 21 days before the next solar term → 21 ÷ 3 = starts at age 7
  • 18 days from the previous solar term → 18 ÷ 3 = starts at age 6
  • Born right on a solar term → starts at age 0 (or 10, depending on the school of thought)

Earliest possible start: birth day itself. Latest: age 10.

Major Luck Cycle and Annual Luck: Sovereign and Minister

Major Luck Cycle = The Sovereign (君)

  • Governs the overall tone of a ten-year stretch — think of it as national policy
  • Sets the broad direction: favorable or unfavorable

Annual Luck = The Minister (臣)

  • Governs one year within that decade — think of it as local implementation
  • Triggers specific events inside the Major Luck Cycle's framework

How They Work Together

CombinationWhat It Means
Major Luck Cycle favorable + Annual Luck favorableA standout year — everything clicks
Major Luck Cycle favorable + Annual Luck unfavorableMinor bumps, but the decade stays on track
Major Luck Cycle unfavorable + Annual Luck favorableA bright spot in a tough stretch — not enough to turn the tide
Major Luck Cycle unfavorable + Annual Luck unfavorableA genuinely hard year — proceed with care

A saying among practitioners: "A good year can't beat a good decade; a good decade can't beat a good year." They work hand in hand — but the Major Luck Cycle holds the higher authority.

Reading Fortune in a Major Luck Cycle

The Pillar's Relationship to Your Favorable Element

  • A luck cycle that walks through your favorable element → good fortune
  • A luck cycle that feeds your unfavorable element → hardship
  • Favorable and unfavorable elements each shape the decade's direction

Combinations and Clashes with Your Natal Chart

  • The luck pillar combines with a natal stem or branch → a transformation is triggered
  • It clashes with a natal branch → disruption
  • It punishes or harms a natal branch → conflict and friction

Layering in the Annual Luck

  • Annual Luck is the trigger for specific events
  • Even inside a favorable decade, a rough year can bring real problems
  • Annual Luck tells you when within the decade things come to a head

How to Read Major Luck Cycles in Your Chart

  1. Determine your year stem's polarity (Yin or Yang) and your gender
  2. Decide whether the cycles run forward or backward
  3. Starting from the month pillar, lay out each luck pillar in sequence
  4. Calculate your starting age
  5. Find which ten-year cycle your current age falls in
  6. Analyze the Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch of that cycle — how do they generate or control the Day Master?
  7. Check whether the cycle walks through your favorable element

Common Misconceptions

❌ "A good Major Luck Cycle guarantees ten smooth years" — Annual Luck still brings year-to-year ups and downs. A great decade has its rough patches. ❌ "A bad Major Luck Cycle means you're doomed" — even a difficult decade has favorable years, and tough cycles can build resilience. ❌ "Starting your luck cycles late means a worse fate" — the starting age is just a timing difference. It has nothing to do with the quality of your chart. ❌ "The year you switch from one cycle to the next always brings big changes" — a transition year can bring shifts, but it's not guaranteed. Annual Luck still decides what actually happens.
