Favorable Element
The favorable element is the single most useful element in your BaZi chart — the soul of chart analysis.
Favorable Element (用神)
In one line: The favorable element is the one element your chart needs most. Finding it is the soul of BaZi analysis.
What Is It?
The favorable element (用神) is the single Five Element the chart most needs. Identifying it is the central act of reading a BaZi chart.
How to Find the Favorable Element
Two steps:
Step 1: Assess Day Master Strength
Sort every Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch in the chart (including each branch's main hidden stem) by element, then count:
- Many elements same as the Day Master (Friend, Rob Wealth) → Day Master is strong
- Many elements that control the Day Master (Direct Officer, Seven Killings) → Day Master is weak
- Many elements that generate the Day Master (Direct Seal, Indirect Seal) → Day Master is strong
- Many elements the Day Master generates (Food God, Hurting Officer) → Day Master is weak (drained)
- Many elements the Day Master controls (Direct Wealth, Indirect Wealth) → Day Master is weak (consumed)
Step 2: Determine What the Chart Favors
- Strong Day Master → favors restraint, drainage, and consumption (Officer/Killings, Food God/Hurting Officer, Wealth)
- Weak Day Master → favors generation and support (Seal, Friend/Rob Wealth)
- Balanced Day Master → look at climate adjustment instead
Favorable, Unfavorable, Enemy, and Idle Elements
- Favorable element (喜神): the element that helps the favorable element
- Unfavorable element (忌神): the element that restrains the favorable element
- Enemy element (仇神): the element that restrains the favorable element's helper
- Idle element (闲神): a neutral element that doesn't participate in the favorable-unfavorable dynamic
Climate Adjustment Favorable Element (Special Case)
The chart's temperature also needs balancing:
- Born in winter → Fire to warm (climate adjustment takes priority)
- Born in summer → Water to cool
- Born in spring or autumn → evaluate the specific combinations
How to Read It in Your BaZi Chart
Open your chart and find the favorable element:
- Count the occurrences of the Day Master's element across the chart
- More than 4 → Day Master is strong; look for restraint, drainage, or consumption
- Fewer than 2 → Day Master is weak; look for generation or support
- For climate adjustment, look at the birth month
Common Misconceptions
❌ "The favorable element is whatever you're missing" — wrong! What's missing isn't necessarily what you need. ❌ "More of the favorable element is always better" — you typically need just one or two; more than that throws the chart off balance. ❌ "The favorable element stays the same for life" — Major Luck Cycles and Annual Luck can shift the element balance, and the favorable element shifts with them.
