Five Elements
The ancients classified all phenomena into five fundamental energy states: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water.
Five Elements
In one line: The ancients sorted everything in the world into five basic energy states — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water — and called them the Five Elements (五行).
What Is It?
The Five Elements aren't five "materials." They're five modes of energy:
- Wood 木: growth, expansion, upward movement (木曰曲直)
- Fire 火: warmth, brightness, rising flame (火曰炎上)
- Earth 土: bearing, nurturing, stability (土爰稼穑)
- Metal 金: contraction, austerity, hardness (金曰从革)
- Water 水: cold, flow, downward movement (水曰润下)
The Three Core Relationships
1. Generating Cycle (相生)
Wood → Fire → Earth → Metal → Water → Wood (endless cycle)
Memory aid: Wood feeds Fire, Fire creates Earth through ash, Earth bears Metal, Metal collects Water, Water nourishes Wood.
2. Controlling Cycle (相克)
Wood → Earth → Water → Fire → Metal → Wood (endless cycle)
Memory aid: Wood parts Earth, Earth dams Water, Water quenches Fire, Fire melts Metal, Metal chops Wood.
3. Over-Control and Counter-Control (Abnormal States)
- Over-control (相乘): one element restrains another too aggressively (e.g., Metal chops Wood to excess)
- Counter-control (相侮): the restrained element pushes back and "reverse-restrains" its controller (e.g., when Fire is too strong, it scorches the Water that should quench it)
How to Read It in Your BaZi Chart
The heart of BaZi analysis is reading the balance of the Five Elements:
- Which element is strongest? (Day Master strength)
- Which element is weakest? (direction of the favorable element)
- Are the generating and controlling relationships in balance? (the success or failure of the chart's pattern)
For example, if your chart has too much Metal, the classical texts call this "Metal flourishing." You'll need Fire to control Metal (climate adjustment) or Water to drain Metal (moderation) — the process of identifying that remedy is called finding the favorable element (取用神).
Common Misconceptions
❌ "The Five Elements are five kinds of matter" — they're energy states, not physical substances. ❌ "Metal means actual metal" — it stands for the qualities of contraction, austerity, and hardness. ❌ "Just supplement whatever you're missing" — you need to look at the entire chart's balance, not simply top up the missing element.
