Climate Adjustment (调候)

In one line: Climate adjustment is the art of balancing the seasonal temperature of your birth chart — cold, hot, dry, or damp — so that the whole system finds equilibrium.

What Is It?

The ancients believed that the seasonal climate at the moment of birth leaves a lasting imprint on the chart:

• Born in deep winter → too cold; needs Fire to warm things up
• Born in high summer → too hot; needs Water to cool things down
• Born in spring or autumn → moderate climate; look at the specific combinations

This method of finding the right remedial element based on the birth month's climate is called climate adjustment — and the element you need is the climate adjustment favorable element (调候用神).

Jia Wood Day Master

• Yin month (early spring): Wu 戊 & Bing 丙 (Earth to nurture, Fire to warm)
• Mao month (mid-spring): Geng 庚 & Ding 丁 (Metal to chop, Fire to refine)

Why Does It Matter?

Climate adjustment is the first priority when choosing the favorable element — according to Qiong Tong Bao Jian (《穷通宝鉴》), it takes precedence even over the support-and-restraint method (which looks at Day Master strength).

The famous BaZi scholar Ren Tieqiao put it this way: "When seasonal support is present, look at support and restraint; when it's absent, look at climate."

How to Read It in Your BaZi Chart

1. Identify your Day Master's element
2. Identify your birth month branch (as defined by the solar terms)
3. Cross-reference Qiong Tong Bao Jian to find the climate adjustment element
4. Count how many of the prescribed elements appear in your chart → the more, the more auspicious; the fewer, the less so

Common Misconceptions

❌ "Climate adjustment just means supplementing whatever's missing" — not quite. It's about what the birth month's climate requires, not simply filling gaps. ❌ "Climate adjustment doesn't matter much" — many charts of great wealth and distinction hinge on having climate adjustment right. ❌ "The climate adjustment element can replace the support-and-restraint favorable element" — both systems need to be considered together.
