Background

Written by Wan Yuwu (万育吾) during the Ming Dynasty's Wanli reign, this twelve-volume work is nothing less than an encyclopedia of BaZi. Its defining feature is the sheer abundance of case studies: every theoretical point is illustrated with numerous chart examples.

1. On the Generation of the Five Elements (Vol. 1)

Heaven stretches high and vast, its six energies cycling to form the four seasons; Earth runs deep and profound, the Five Elements transforming to bring forth all creation.

Key points:

• Water → 1 (first yang number), source of all things
• Fire → 2 (first yin number), harbinger of life
• Wood → 3 (odd number, yang), beginning of growth
• Metal → 4 (even number, yin), completion of harvest
• Earth → 5 (yang, center), foundation that bears all things

All generative numbers pair with five to reach completion — this is the numerical basis of the Five Elements' generating and controlling cycles.

2. On the Yin-Yang Birth and Death of the Heavenly Stems (Vol. 2)

Among the ten stems, five are yang and five are yin. Yang is firm, yin is yielding. The boundary between their birth and death is like a mother bearing a child: when the child comes of age, the mother grows old and passes.

Birth-and-death positions for each stem:

• Jia Wood: born in Hai, dies in Wu ("Wood does not flee south")
• Yi Wood: born in Wu, dies in Hai ("When waters flood, wood drifts")

Virtue ascendant in its season is called Prosperous.

In discussing Patterns, Xu Ziping (徐子平) singled out four categories as the guiding framework: Seal, Food God, Officer, and Wealth.

Direct Officer:

• Signifies: restraint, discipline, official career, husband
• Favorable: strong Day Master with Seal protection; Officer star pure and clear

• Unfavorable: Killings heavy, Day Master weak

Abandoning the Day Master to Follow Killings (Vol. 5):

"Abandoning the Day Master to Follow Killings is akin to Following Wealth. Following Wealth requires Wealth to be flourishing; Abandoning the Day Master requires Killings to be flourishing." Conditions: The Day Master has no root; the Killings form a complete elemental frame or combination; no Seal or Friend appears in the four pillars.

5. Oral Instructions for Reading Destiny (Vol. 10)

When reading a chart, first examine whether the Month Branch holds Wealth or Officer; only then turn to the rest. The Month Command is the destiny itself.

Guiding principles:

1. The Month Command is the destiny — begin with the Month Branch and its Wealth or Officer
2. The Year is the root; the Day is the master — the Year Pillar sets the foundation, the Day Pillar defines the person
3. Major Luck Cycles draw on the Branch; Annual Luck draws on the Stem — Branches govern what is still, Stems govern what moves
4. Whether a Pattern succeeds or fails hinges on rescue and support

Shen Zhiyun (沈芝云): "Broken Seal, broken Wealth, broken Prosperity alike; a broken Horse has seldom been my blessing. Add broken combinations and a Day–Hour clash — affliction strikes not at the limbs but at the head and eyes."

The core differences between reading a woman's chart and a man's:

• Man's chart: Officer and Killings represent children (what controls me)
• Woman's chart: Food God and Hurting Officer represent children (what I generate); Officer and Killings represent the husband
• A woman's chart focuses on the husband and children stars — check whether they are pure and strong
• Unfavorable for women: Hurting Officer confronting Officer; Seven Killings mixed with Officer; Peach Blossom and Xian Chi

Vol. 11 — On Configuration and Temperament

Written by Zui Xing Zi (醉醒子), this chapter proposes reading destiny through "configuration and temperament":

• Configuration: the overall bearing and quality of the chart
• Pattern: the specific structural arrangement
• Only by combining both can one grasp "the outline of wealth and poverty, the subtlety of life and death, the fine grain of success and failure"

Core maxim: "No need for an ornate and elaborate chart — only the Five Elements in harmonious accord. Vainly point to the Three Wonders and the Six Jia; who can fathom the thousand threads and hundred strands?"

Vol. 12 — Yuan Li Fu (by Xu Dasheng, 徐大升)

The primordial one qi gives birth to the Five Elements, unifies the Three Powers, and encompasses all creation. It unfolds the wondrous workings of Heaven and Earth and lays bare the pivot of yin and yang.

Case 1: Six Jia Day, Jia Zi Hour

Jia day, Jia Zi hour: though Jia is in its defeated phase at Zi, a hidden Gui Water Direct Seal lurks within, and Officer is present to generate that Seal.

Original judgment: "If Ji Earth breaks the Seal but the month's qi still communicates, the person rises to nobility. Otherwise — brilliant but unfulfilled."

Lesson: Even in defeat, a Seal persists; it takes the stem Ji Earth to break the Seal before nobility can manifest.

Jia day, Bing Yin hour: Food God generates Wealth — a sign of intelligence, wealth, and distinction.
