Background

Di Tian Sui is traditionally attributed to Liu Bowen (刘伯温 / Liu Ji), a strategist of the Ming Dynasty, though the authorship is disputed. The Qing-dynasty Ren Tieqiao (任铁樵) provided extensive annotations, weaving in his own practical case studies, making this book the founding text of the Qi-Li School (理气派).

Ren's preface: "Zi Ping's method is entirely about the Five Elements of the Four Pillars. Observe their flourishing and decline, investigate their compliance and opposition, examine their advance and retreat, discuss their favor and aversion — this is the so-called principle-meeting. As for the odd patterns and strange frameworks, the Shen Sha and Na Yin categories, these are fabricated by idlers, having nothing to do with BaZi fortune or misfortune."

This single passage sets the tone for Di Tian Sui's core stance: return to the true nature of the Five Elements, and discard odd patterns and Shen Sha as fancy notions.

Elevate BaZi to a philosophical height — it's not mechanical formula-matching, but a felt understanding of how heaven moves. Ren said: "Stems are the Heavenly element, branches are the Earthly element, and the Hidden Stems (Cang Gan) in branches are the Human element. A person's endowment of fate, in all its variety, ultimately does not transcend the principles of these three elements — this is what is called the source of ten thousand methods."

2. Strength as Foundation (Day Master View)

To judge a BaZi chart, first look at Day Master strength:

• Gaining season (month branch supports) + Gaining ground (deep root qi) + Gaining momentum (stem assistance) = strong
• Otherwise = weak
• If strong, restrain it; if weak, support it — this is the first principle in choosing a Useful God

3. Useful God Supreme (Method View)

Some BaZi scholars say: Master the Useful God, and you master the entire BaZi

Ren said: "Those who don't understand fate are like the deaf; those who understand fate can grasp the mechanism of compliance and opposition in it, and may open the ears of the world."

The relationship between major luck cycles, annual years, and the natal chart is a "compliance" vs. "opposition" contest:

• Compliance: the major luck supports what the chart needs → auspicious period
• Opposition: the major luck restrains what the chart needs → inauspicious period
• Key: whether the Useful God gains power in the luck cycle

7. The Way of Abandoning and Retaining (Practical View)

Ren Tieqiao repeatedly emphasized:

"Odd patterns and strange frameworks, Shen Sha and Na Yin categories, are fabricated by idlers, having nothing to do with BaZi fortune or misfortune."
