Useful God (Yong Shen)

What is it?

Useful God = the one element your chart most needs. Identifying the Useful God is the "soul" of BaZi analysis.

How to find the Useful God (Yong Shen)?

Two steps:

Step 1: Assess Day Master (Ri Zhu) Strength

Count all stems and branches (including hidden stem main qi) by element:

• Many "same as me" (Friend (Bi Jian)) → Day Master strong
• Many "restrain me" (Officer/Seven Killings (Qi Sha)) → Day Master weak
• Many "generate me" (Seal) → Day Master strong
• Many "I generate" (Output/Hurting) → Day Master weak (drained)
• Many "I restrain" (Wealth) → Day Master weak (consumed)

Step 2: Determine Favor and Aversion

• Day Master strong → favor restraint, drain, consume (Officer, Output, Wealth)
• Day Master weak → favor generation, support (Seal, Friend)
• Day Master balanced → look at climatic balance

Favor, Aversion, Enemy, Idle

• Favor God (喜神): helps the Useful God
• Aversion God (忌神): restrains the Useful God
• Enemy God (仇神): restrains the Favor God
• Idle God (闲神): neutral, doesn't participate in favor or aversion

Climate Useful God (Yong Shen)

Cold/hot/dry/damp must also be balanced:

• Born in winter → favor Fire to warm (climate comes first)
• Born in summer → favor Water to cool
• Spring/autumn → look at combinations

How to read it in your BaZi chart?

Open your chart and find the Useful God:

1. Count occurrences of the Day Master element in the chart
2. More than 4 → strong, look for restraint/drain/consumption
3. Less than 2 → weak, look for generation/support
4. Climate: look at birth month

Common Misconceptions

❌ "The Useful God is what you're missing" — wrong! What you're missing isn't always what you need to supplement. ❌ "More Useful Gods is better" — only 1–2 Useful Gods; more causes imbalance. ❌ "The Useful God never changes" — major luck cycle cycles and annual years can change the element balance, and the Useful God shifts with them.
