Five Elements (Wu Xing)
In one line: The ancients classified all phenomena into 5 basic energies — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water — known as the Five Elements.
What is it?
The Five Elements are not 5 "substances" but 5 states of energy:
- Wood: growth, expansion, upward (木曰曲直)
- Fire: warmth, brightness, ascending (火曰炎上)
- Earth: bearing, nurturing, stable (土爰稼穑)
- Metal: contraction, austerity, hard (金曰从革)
- Water: cold, flowing, downward (水曰润下)
The 3 Core Relationships
1. Generating (相生)
Wood → Fire → Earth → Metal → Water → Wood (cycle of generation)
Memory aid: Wood feeds Fire, Fire creates Earth (ash), Earth bears Metal, Metal collects Water, Water nourishes Wood
2. Restraining (相克)
Wood → Earth → Water → Fire → Metal → Wood (cycle of restraint)
Memory aid: Wood parts Earth, Earth blocks Water, Water quenches Fire, Fire melts Metal, Metal cuts Wood
3. Over-restraining and Counter-restraint
- Over-restraining (相乘): excessive restraint
- Counter-restraint: reverse restraint
How to read it in your BaZi chart?
The core of BaZi analysis is the balance of the Five Elements:
- Which element is strongest? (Day Master (Ri Zhu) strength)
- Which is weakest? (Useful God (Yong Shen) direction)
- Are the generating/restraining relationships balanced? (Pattern (Ge Ju) success/failure)
For example, if your chart has too much Metal, classical masters call it "Metal flourishing", and you need Fire to restrain Metal (climatic balance) or Water to drain Metal (moderation) — this is called identifying the Useful God.
Common Misconceptions
❌ "The Five Elements are 5 kinds of matter" — they are energy states, not materials. ❌ "Metal means actual metal" — it represents the qualities of contraction and austerity. ❌ "Just supplement what you're missing" — look at the whole chart's balance, not just deficits.
