Five Stem Combinations (天干五合)

In one line: The 10 Heavenly Stems pair into 5 intimate combinations — when two stems combine, they can transform into an entirely new element.

What is it?

Among the 10 Heavenly Stems, certain pairs have a natural attraction — like magnets clicking together. These are the Five Combinations (天干五合). Each pair consists of one Yang stem and one Yin stem (Yin-Yang (Yin Yang) attraction at work).

When two combining stems meet in a chart, they don't just "get along" — they can merge and transform into a new element entirely.

The Five Combinations

A simple way to remember: the transformed element follows the element that the Yang stem restrains, or the generating cycle. The classical formula is: "Jia-Ji合化土, Yi-Geng合化金, Bing-Xin合化水, Ding-Ren合化木, Wu-Gui合化火".

Conditions for Transformation

Not every meeting of combining stems results in a full transformation. The stems must actually merge and transform (化) — and this requires conditions:

1. They must be adjacent: The two stems need to sit next to each other (e.g., Year stem + Month stem, or Month stem + Day stem). Stems far apart in the chart have weaker pulling power.
2. The transformed element must be supported: The month branch (月令) must carry the transformed element, or the chart overall must show that element strongly. Without environmental support, the combination holds but does not transform.
3. No interference: If a third stem clashes or disrupts either partner, the combination may be broken (破合).

When stems combine but do not transform, they still bond — meaning each stem is "tied up" and its original function is weakened. This is called "合而不化" (combining without transforming).

How to read it in your BaZi chart?

Stem combinations dramatically change how you read a chart:

1. Day Master (Ri Zhu) combining away: If your Day Master combines with another stem (e.g., Ji appearing in the Month stem), your Day Master is "drawn away" — its loyalty shifts toward the transformed element (Earth). This can fundamentally change your chart's pattern.
2. Combination altering element balance: If Bing and Xin combine and transform into Water, you lose Fire and Metal energy but gain Water energy. The entire Five Element balance shifts.
3. Combination blocking the Useful God (Yong Shen): If your Useful God is Jia Wood, but Jia combines with Ji and transforms into Earth, your Useful God is "taken away" — the chart's dynamics change completely.
4. Partial combination: Even when the combination doesn't fully transform, the two stems are still "entangled" — they can't function at full strength in their original roles.

Common Misconceptions

❌ "Any two combining stems always transform" — transformation requires specific conditions (month support, no interference). Many combinations bond but don't transform. ❌ "Stem combinations are always good" — if your Useful God gets combined away, the combination is harmful to your chart. ❌ "Combined stems lose all their original nature" — when combining without transforming, the stems still retain their original element; they're just weakened, not erased.
