What is it?

Just as Heavenly Stems (Tian Gan) have five combinations, Earthly Branches have six pair combinations (地支六合). These are not random pairs — they follow a precise pattern of Yin-Yang (Yin Yang) attraction across opposite positions in the branch cycle.

Each pair bonds intimately — this is why they're called "Six Harmonies" (六合), meaning "six intimate unions."

The Six Combinations (Liu He)

Memory pattern: The pairs are formed by branches that are opposite in the zodiac wheel but complementary in Yin-Yang — one Yang, one Yin, separated by 7 positions.

Conditions for Transformation

As with stem combinations, branch combinations don't always fully transform:

1. The month branch must support the transformed element — e.g., Zi+Chou transforming into Earth requires an Earth-type month (Chen, Xu, Chou, Wei) or strong Earth presence.
2. No disruption from clashes or punishments — if a clashing branch is present, it can break the combination apart.

• Bondage (绊): When a branch that is your Useful God (Yong Shen) gets combined, it's "tied up" — its positive function is restricted. This is called being bound (合绊).
• Transformation: When the combination fully transforms, the original branch energies are replaced by the new element.

1. Day Branch combining: Your Day Branch represents your inner self and spouse palace. If it combines with another branch (e.g., Day Branch Zi combines with Month Branch Chou), your inner energy is drawn toward the Month pillar — often indicating career or family pulling you in.
