Three Branch Harmonies (地支三合)

In one line: When three specific Earthly Branches (Di Zhi) join together, they form a harmony frame (三合局) — a combined force far more powerful than any pair combination.

What is it?

The Six Combinations (Liu He) are pairs, but the Three Harmonies are trios. Three branches, each drawn from a different part of the cycle, lock together to form a complete elemental frame. This frame generates a unified elemental force so strong it can dominate the entire chart.

There are exactly four Three Harmony frames, one for each of the Four Elements (excluding Earth, which sits at the center):

The Four Harmony Frames

Memory aid: Each frame consists of three branches spaced 4 apart. They represent the Growth (生), Emperor (旺/帝旺), and Grave (墓) stages of the element's life cycle — the three key moments that define an element's complete journey.

For example, in the Shen-Zi-Chen Water frame:

• Shen (申): where Water is "born" (长生) — the source
• Zi (子): where Water is at "Emperor" peak (帝旺) — the powerhouse
• Chen (辰): where Water goes to its "Grave" (墓) — the storage

Together, they form a complete Water cycle — source, peak, and storage — producing a Water force that is extremely concentrated and hard to break.

Half-Frames (半三合)

You don't always need all three branches to form a partial harmony. Two out of three creates a half-frame (半合):

The growth half (生旺半合) is stronger because it connects the source with the peak. The grave half (旺墓半合) connects the peak with storage — still powerful, but slightly less dynamic.

The growth-grave half without the Emperor branch is considered incomplete and weak — it's like having a beginning and an end but no middle.

How to read it in your BaZi chart?

Three Harmony frames are among the most powerful structures in BaZi:

1. Full frame dominance: If your chart contains all three branches of a harmony frame (e.g., Shen, Zi, and Chen all present), that element becomes enormously strong — it can single-handedly define your chart's pattern.
2. Half-frames in the natal chart: Even a half-frame significantly boosts that element's power. Shen+Zi in your chart already gives Water a major advantage.
3. Luck pillar completion: If your natal chart has two branches of a frame (e.g., Shen and Chen), and a luck pillar brings the third (Zi), the full frame suddenly activates — this can mark a dramatic turning point in life.
4. Breaking and forming: Clashes can disrupt a three-harmony frame. A branch that clashes with a frame member can "break the frame" — but three-harmony frames are much harder to break than pair combinations.
5. Element direction: Three Harmony frames point to a specific element becoming dominant. If that element is your Useful God (Yong Shen), the frame is highly beneficial. If it's your unfavorable element, the frame can bring difficulties.

Common Misconceptions

❌ "Three Harmonies are just stronger versions of Six Combinations" — they are structurally different. Six Combinations are Yin-Yang (Yin Yang) pairs; Three Harmonies are element-life-cycle frames. Their mechanics and meanings are distinct. ❌ "Any two branches of a frame equal a half-harmony" — the growth-grave half (e.g., Shen+Chen without Zi) is very weak and generally not treated as a true half-frame by classical masters. ❌ "Three Harmony frames can't be broken" — they are harder to break than pairs, but a strong clash from the right direction can still disrupt them. The frame's strength depends on how many members are present and how well-supported they are. ❌ "Half-frames are useless" — a growth half (e.g., Shen+Zi) is quite powerful and should not be overlooked. It can significantly shift the element balance.
