Major Luck Cycle (Da Yun)

What is it?

While your natal BaZi chart represents your innate destiny — what you were born with — the Major Luck Cycle pillars represent the changing circumstances of your life. Each Major Luck Cycle pillar lasts ten years and brings a new set of elemental energies.

Think of the natal chart as a car and the Major Luck Cycle as the road. A good car on a bad road still struggles; a modest car on a good road can go far.

Arrangement Rules

The direction of Major Luck Cycle pillar progression depends on two factors:

1. Year Stem Polarity (阴阳)

• Yang Year Stem (甲丙戊庚壬): Male charts count forward, Female charts count backward
• Yin Year Stem (乙丁己辛癸): Male charts count backward, Female charts count forward

This is the principle of "Yang Male and Yin Female go forward; Yin Male and Yang Female go backward" (阳男阴女顺排，阴男阳女逆排).

2. Counting from the Month Branch

• Forward: The first Major Luck Cycle pillar is the next branch after the Month Branch
• Backward: The first Major Luck Cycle pillar is the previous branch before the Month Branch

The Heavenly Stems (Tian Gan) cycle in the same direction, following the 60 Jiazi sequence.

Starting Age Calculation

The starting age is determined by counting days from birth to the nearest solar term (节气):

• Forward counting: Count from the birth date to the next solar term
• Backward counting: Count from the birth date to the previous solar term

Rule: Every 3 days = 1 year of starting age. (1 day = 4 months)

For example:

• Born 9 days before the next solar term → Major Luck Cycle starts at age 3
• Born 18 days after the previous solar term → Major Luck Cycle starts at age 6
• If born exactly on a solar term → Major Luck Cycle starts at age 0 or 10 (debated)

Maximum starting age: 10 years (30 days). Minimum: 0 (born on the solar term).

Major Luck Cycle (Da Yun) and Annual Luck (Liu Nian): Sovereign and Minister

Major Luck Cycle (Da Yun) = The Sovereign (君)

• Governs a 10-year period
• Sets the theme and direction for that decade
• Determines the overall tone — favorable or unfavorable

Annual Luck (Liu Nian) = The Minister (臣)

• Governs one year within the 10-year Major Luck Cycle period
• Acts within the framework set by the Major Luck Cycle
• Can modify but not override the Major Luck Cycle

Key principle:

• Good Major Luck Cycle + Bad Annual → temporary setback within a good period
• Bad Major Luck Cycle + Good Annual → temporary relief within a difficult period
• Good Major Luck Cycle + Good Annual → excellent year
• Bad Major Luck Cycle + Bad Annual → very difficult year

Step 1: Assess the Major Luck Cycle (Da Yun) Pillar
