The 12 Life Stages
The Five Elements cycle through twelve life states — from birth to death to rebirth — in the twelve Earthly Branches.
The 12 Life Stages
In one line: Each of the Five Elements moves through twelve stages of vitality in the twelve Earthly Branches — birth, growth, peak, decline, death, and rebirth — mapping the rhythm of energy itself.
What Is It?
The 12 life stages treat the ebb and flow of elemental energy as a human life cycle, divided into twelve phases:
| Stage | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 长生 Longevity | Just born; energy emerging |
| 沐浴 Bath | Infant's first bath; energy visible but fragile |
| 冠带 Capping | Coming of age; energy taking shape |
| 临官 Official | Entering adulthood; energy mature and usable |
| 帝旺 Emperor | Peak of power; energy at its strongest |
| 衰 Decline | Starting to wane |
| 病 Illness | Energy weakening further |
| 死 Death | Energy nearly gone |
| 墓 Grave | Buried and stored; energy sealed away |
| 绝 Extinction | Completely exhausted; energy at zero |
| 胎 Womb | Newly conceived; energy beginning to form again |
| 养 Nurturing | Gestating in the womb; energy accumulating |

Key points:
- Yang stems move forward (Longevity → Emperor → Grave → Extinct, clockwise).
- Yin stems move backward (Longevity → Emperor → Grave → Extinct, counter-clockwise).
- The Longevity positions for Yin stems are debated among practitioners; in practice, most readers default to the Yang-stem positions.
How to Read It in Your BaZi Chart
-
Assess Day Master strength: If the Day Master sits at its Longevity, Official, or Emperor position in the chart's branches, it draws strong energy. If it sits at Death, Grave, or Extinction, it draws very little.
-
Map elemental force distribution: An element whose Earthly Branch falls at Emperor stage in the chart carries maximum force; one at Extinction carries the least.
-
Read the Major Luck Cycles and Annual Luck: When a Major Luck Cycle enters the Emperor branch for a given element, that element's power surges; when the cycle enters the Grave or Extinction branch, that element withers. This is the underlying logic of life's ups and downs.
-
Watch the Grave storage: The Grave is an energy warehouse — Chen 辰 stores Water, Xu 戌 stores Fire, Chou 丑 stores Metal, Wei 未 stores Wood. When the Grave is clashed open, the stored energy bursts free.
Common Misconceptions
❌ "The 12 life stages describe a person's lifespan" — they describe the state of elemental energy, not literal human birth and death (though the analogy is useful for interpretation). ❌ "Death, Grave, and Extinction are always bad" — if the element in question is an unfavorable element, its weakness or disappearance can be a good thing. ❌ "Yin-stem life stages work the same as Yang-stem ones" — Yin-stem Longevity positions are controversial. Beginners should start with the Yang-stem system and explore the Yin-stem reverse cycle only after gaining confidence.
