What is Annual Luck?

Annual Luck is the stem-branch pair of the current year. It represents the specific energy shaping your chart for that year.

Each year draws its own stem-branch combination from the 60 Jiazi cycle:

• 2024 = 甲辰 (Jia Chen)
• 2025 = 乙巳 (Yi Si)
• 2026 = 丙午 (Bing Wu)

Within the Major Luck Cycle's ten-year sweep — the "sovereign" — Annual Luck plays the minister's role, triggering specific events inside the broader theme.

What is Tai Sui?

Tai Sui (太岁, literally "Grand Duke" or "Great Year") is the branch of the current year — the year's zodiac animal. It is the ruling authority for the year. Classical texts put it plainly: "Tai Sui holds the power of one year."

For example:

• A 辰 year → Tai Sui is 辰
• A 巳 year → Tai Sui is 巳

BaZi analysis treats Tai Sui with great respect because it sets the year's overall tone.

Four Types of Tai Sui Interactions

1. Clashing Tai Sui

• Your natal year branch sits directly opposite the year's branch
• The six clashes: 子↔午, 丑↔未, 寅↔申, 卯↔酉, 辰↔戌, 巳↔亥

• The most dramatic of the four interactions

2. Offending Tai Sui (Ben Ming Nian)

Common Misconceptions

❌ "Clashing Tai Sui is always bad." A clash can break open a tomb storage or dislodge an unfavorable element — sometimes the disruption is exactly what you need. ❌ "You have to wear red during your zodiac year." That's folk custom. Whether your zodiac year brings good or ill depends on the actual chart. ❌ "A bad year means hiding at home." Trouble can be the seed of a turnaround. The key is knowing where the danger lies so you can prepare. ❌ "Everyone needs to appease Tai Sui every year." Tai Sui isn't automatically hostile — in some years it's actually a favorable influence.
