“The Twelve Palaces: Twelve Domains of a Chart”

Learn the twelve life domains, how the three directions and four fronts work, and where the Body Palace fits.

About 2 min418 words

In one line: The twelve palaces are not isolated rooms. They are a connected field, and reading Ziwei begins with locating a question in the right domain.

The Order of the Twelve Palaces

Starting from the Life Palace, the chart arranges twelve palaces counterclockwise:

PalaceMain Focus
LifeSelf, central theme, outward presentation
SiblingsSiblings, peers, and close partners
SpouseIntimacy, partnership, and relational style
ChildrenChildren, creativity, works, and projection
WealthIncome style, resources, and money attitudes
HealthBody and mind, stress response, habits
TravelExternal environment, travel, social opportunity
FriendsFriends, subordinates, networks, and collaboration
CareerWork, role, and professional style
PropertyHome, family space, and asset building
FortuneInner life, interests, enjoyment, and satisfaction
ParentsElders, institutions, authority, and support

Schools differ on a few names, such as Friends versus Servants, but the underlying life domains remain broadly stable.

The Life Palace Is Not the Whole Story

The Life Palace is an entrance, not a conclusion. Looking only at it compresses a person into a personality label. A responsible reading also considers the Wealth, Career, and Travel palaces: the traditional “three directions and four fronts.”

The three directions connect a palace to the three palaces four positions away; the four fronts add the opposite palace. For the Life Palace, this links Wealth, Career, and Travel. Together they ask how a person acts, gains resources, works, and meets the outside world.

The Body Palace

The Body Palace is not a fixed thirteenth palace. Depending on the birth hour, it falls in one of six palaces: Life, Spouse, Wealth, Travel, Career, or Fortune. It describes where a person tends to invest energy and where reality pulls their attention in adulthood.

The Life Palace leans toward “who I am”; the Body Palace leans toward “where I put my effort.” When they coincide, identity and action are more aligned. When they differ, there may be a distance between inner identification and lived investment.

Opposite and Neighboring Palaces

The opposite palace supplies tension and external conditions. Life and Travel face each other: self and environment. Spouse and Career face each other: relationship and work often affect one another. Neighboring palaces add context, but should not be inflated into determinism.

A Practical Reading Sequence

First locate the palace related to the question. Then list its three directions and four fronts. Next read primary stars, supporting stars, and Transformations. Finally add the current decade and year. Keep track of which evidence supports each statement; that is more reliable than memorizing a verdict.
