Twelve Life Stages (Shi Er Chang Sheng)

In one line: Each of the Five Elements (Wu Xing) cycles through 12 life stages — from birth to peak to death to rebirth — mirroring the human journey through life.

What is it?

The ancients mapped the life cycle of energy onto 12 stages, just like a human life: conception, birth, growth, prime, decline, death, and return. This system is called the Twelve Life Stages or Twelve Phases (十二运).

Every element — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water — moves through these 12 stages, but each element starts its cycle at a different branch. The stage name tells you the vitality state of that element at that branch.

The cycle then returns to Longevity — birth again. This mirrors the endless cycle of life, death, and rebirth.

The Life Stage Table for Each Element

Each element begins its Longevity stage at a different branch:

Key observations:

• Wood starts at Hai (beginning of winter) — life stirs in the depth of cold.
• Fire and Earth share the same cycle (Fire generates Earth, so Earth follows Fire's path).
• Metal starts at Si (beginning of summer) — Metal is "born" when Fire is rising, which seems paradoxical but reflects the generating cycle.
• Water starts at Shen (beginning of autumn) — Water is "born" when Metal (its parent) is strong.

The Emperor (帝旺) stage always lands on the Cardinal Branch of that element: Mao for Wood, Wu for Fire, You for Metal, Zi for Water. This is where the element's power is at its absolute peak.

How to read it in your BaZi chart?

The Twelve Life Stages add a vitality dimension to your chart analysis:

1. Day Master (Ri Zhu) vitality: What stage is your Day Master's element at, in the month branch? If Jia (Wood) is born in Mao month, Wood is at Emperor stage — extremely strong. If born in Shen month, Wood is at Extinct stage — very weak.
2. Branch vitality: Each branch in your four pillars can be evaluated by what stage the Day Master's element is at in that branch. A branch where your Day Master is at Longevity or Emperor provides strong support; a branch at Death or Grave provides little.
3. Ten God vitality: The Twelve Life Stages also apply to the other stems in your chart. A Wealth god at Emperor stage is vibrant and abundant; a Wealth god at Grave stage is buried and hard to access.
4. Life cycle reading: Some classical practitioners read the 12 stages across luck pillars as a life narrative — periods of Longevity bring new beginnings, Emperor brings peak achievement, Grave brings closure and storage.

Common Misconceptions

❌ "Death (死) stage means actual death" — it's a metaphor for energy state, not a literal prediction. The Death stage simply means the element's energy is at its lowest; it doesn't indicate physical death. ❌ "Longevity is always the best stage" — Longevity is birth — full of potential but not yet powerful. Emperor is the stage of actual peak strength. Each stage has its own significance. ❌ "The twelve stages are the same as element strength" — they're related but not identical. Element strength also depends on season (month), combinations, and other factors. The twelve stages are one important layer, not the whole picture. ❌ "Grave (墓) stage means the element is gone forever" — the Grave stage means the energy is stored, not destroyed. Under the right conditions (being "opened" by clash or combination), grave-stored energy can be released.
